The Class
Problem solving skills are used both in the workshop and in the decision about a home for the bike. Students decide whether to repair the bikes for themselves or donate the bikes to someone in need.
Enhancing environmental awareness, building social skills and a social conscience, and involving students as members of the school community are goals for the Bicycle Recycle Project.
Loaves and Fishes Day
Loaves and Fishes is a private sector charitable organization dedicated to feeding the hungry and sheltering the homeless in Sacramento, CA. Seven Hills students travel to Loaves and Fishes with the refurbished bikes. A free raffle of the bikes the students have repaired and an onsite bicycle maintenance and repair service are the highlights of the day for the guests of Loaves & Fishes,
Students learn about the struggles of the homeless and have an opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life.
Bicycle Underground Summer Program
The fun doesn’t stop, just because school’s out for the summer. More relaxed than the classes offered during the school year, the Bicycle Underground offers up to 16 students in sixth through eight grades the chance to build bikes for themselves or others. Previous students can work independently and are considered Apprentice Mechanics with the option to work on special projects.
